What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is an Ethical Ecological Design Science that teaches us how to design our Homes, Farms, Businesses and Communities to work with nature’s four billion years of success. It utilizes the three Permaculture Ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share (return the surplus to the first two) to lay the foundations of a Symbiotic system. It then lays out a series of Principles to help guide our actions in relation to the creation and maintenance of a home, homestead, farm, business or community to ensure symbiosis with nature. Bill Mollison and David Holmgren both contributed to the creation of these principles and they continue to be added to by various Permaculturalists. It is then followed up with design methods that will interconnect, harness or mitigate natural energies to create ecological efficiency. These methods are then refined by teaching the designers how to design within the limits and opportunities of their Climate and ecosystem. The result is an evolving culture that is guided by the foundational ethics and principles to take us beyond the parasitic relationship humanity has with nature and into the creation of a symbiotic relationship of humanity and nature.

The History:

Permaculture was developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Australia in the mid to late 1970’s. They published the first book on Permaculture, “Perma-Culture One” in 1978. David went on to live, experiment and eventually publish 3 more books on Permaculture while Bill went on to teach Permaculture around the world, training thousands and publishing 5 more books. The legacy of these two pioneers have created researchers around the globe applying these techniques in all types of ecosystems. Bill, who developed the 72 hour Design Certification, developed this training in such a way that once one is certified, the graduate can go on and train others. This created a viral effect which has allowed a natural dispersion of the knowledge, research and design methods to adapt it to different ecosystems and cultures, yet always harkening back to Permaculture’s Ethics, Principles and Design Methodologies to ensure a symbiotic evolution. We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg of this growing and evolving relationship between humanity and the ecological systems we evolved from.
